Should Your Baby See a Chiropractor?

Whether or not your baby should see a chiropractor is a valid question. A lot of people think that the only reason to see a chiropractor is if they have back or neck pain. Nothing could be further from the truth. Chiropractic health care is based on the premise that our bodies work as a whole; that’s why it’s referred to as “holistic treatment.” The spinal cord is the path along which all of the rest of the body functions, with regard to muscles and nerves. Just like the brain controls all functions of thought and movement.

A good chiropractor will ask questions when you arrive for a visit with pain. How long have you had the pain? Is it continual, or just upon certain movements? He is looking for connections within the body to help determine the correct path of treatment. Adults and older children can easily answer these questions.

If Your Baby Could Talk To a Chiropractor

But a baby can’t. If a baby could talk to a chiropractor, he might say, “I’ve been stuck in an awkward position for many long months and there was pressure on my neck.” That pressure, in a baby, might result in a headache or upset tummy. A toddler can’t tell you that sitting in that car seat for a long car trip or plane ride has made him uncomfortable; or that because of the pressure of such things, fluid is now not draining correctly, and his ears hurt.

Babies and small children just get cranky, irritable and they cry a lot. It is up to conscientious parents to be proactive to see that all possible hindrances to optimum health are eliminated. This is why it’s a very good idea to bring your baby in for a thorough chiropractic checkup after birth, and to continue with regular gentle adjustments. A chiropractor who offers total family care will have specialized training in helping a baby or a small child to stay healthy. Most children who are accustomed to coming to the chiropractor’s office along with his parents view the experience as fun and they have no fear. Chiropractors who have pediatric patients will often have a special “fun” table for the kids to climb on – perhaps shaped like an animal, such as a horse or cow. In the office of Carolina Wellness And Rehab, our “Moo-Table” is a hit with the kids.
