How Can A Chiropractor Treat Your Migraine Headache?

It’s the holidays and you want to have fun with your kids, but you know that your migraine will only get in the way. As you start your holiday shopping spree, you start to feel all the familiar signs – having cloudy vision and becoming more sensitive to noise. As you pass by store after store, you start to feel that familiar stiffness in your neck, which will eventually develop into a dull throb in your head. By the time the kids are asking for you to take their picture with Santa, you are nauseated by the pounding sensation in your head.

Who would want to spend the holiday season suffering through bouts of migraine headache attacks?

According to statistics, one out of ten people suffer from this common severe headache condition. Although there are some medicines that could lessen the pain, this can be overwhelming. The more often you take medicine, the easier it will be for the pain to ignore the effects of your medication. As a result, you will have to constantly increase your dosage or move on to a more advanced medication.

Fortunately, you no longer have to depend on your medication or worry about getting migraines in the middle of your holiday shopping or vacation. A recent study has proven that chiropractic treatment helps prevent this condition from occurring.

This study observed two groups of individuals (127 in total) who suffer migraines at least once a month. The experimental group received chiropractic treatment in the form of adjustments at specific vertebral subluxations as specified by the practitioner. The control group received inactive treatment by way of electrical stimulation with no current delivered.

After two months of chiropractic treatment, the experimental group has reported decreased frequency in experiencing migraine and reduced duration and disability. They also decreased their need for medication. More specifically, the study has proven that one in five participants reported a 90% decrease in migraines, while 50% reported significant improvement to migraine severity.

What makes chiropractic treatment different from traditional medication?

A chiropractic treatment aims at the cause of the disease or sickness. It does not primarily serve to cover up symptoms or lessen the pain, unlike ordinary medications. It works to reduce or eliminate what is specifically causing an individual’s migraine attack.

Aside from this, another reason to consider a chiropractor for your migraines is that they use a conservative and corrective approach without the many side effects brought on by the various medications for this condition. For those regularly taking medications, they may experience dizziness, fainting, nausea, confusion, muscle weakness, organ damage, and sleep disorders aside from the usual symptoms of their condition. There are also medications like butalbitals and opiates that can cause rebound headaches when the individual starts to withdraw from the medication.
