Get back your vigor and vitality!
Erectile Dysfunction is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection adequate for sexual intercourse. It is more common than most people realize. In the past, it has been referred to as impotence. However, this term has become associated with myths and taboos on the subject. Perhaps this is why only 18% of men over 65 suffering from it seek treatment.
Myths and Taboos — Ancient History
When people don’t understand something, they tend to generate some myth about it to somehow explain the subject. And so it has been on the subject of impotence throughout history. Man through the ages has been trying to explain it. But lacking a true understanding of the causes, they have created taboos and myths about erectile dysfunction.
As far back as the 8th century BC, the Hindus believed that impotence resulted from a mental problem created from being forced to have intercourse with a disagreeable woman. In Ancient Egypt, they believed one of the causes of impotence could come from evil charms and spells. In Greek mythology impotence in adult life was caused by sexual anxiety in childhood. Impotence is also mentioned in the Old Testament. King Abimelech of Gerar is believed to have become impotent as punishment for taking Abraham’s wife, Sarah, who was introduced to him as Abraham’s sister. Ref. Erectile Dysfunction Through the Ages.
What is the True Problem?
Putting all myths aside, let us look at what can cause the problem of ED. Erections are caused by a specific series of physiological events. If anything interrupts or interferes with those events, erectile dysfunction can be the result.
Mechanical Causes:
- Lack of sufficient blood flow. Causes resulting in insufficient blood flow can include: drugs, smoking, alcohol, and atherosclerosis.
- Damage to tissues such as from surgery or injury.
Nerves:
There is damage to nerve tissues from surgery or injury.
Common & Progressive
While ED can occur in young men, it is more common and becomes more severe as we age.
50% over 50
60% over 60
70% over 70
It is essential to understand that there are different degrees of ED. We use a survey that gives us a score. The results of the survey score the severity of the problem. The score is referred to as SHIM — Sexual Health Inventory for Men. The scale breaks down into categories as follows:
SHIM Scores | You may have . . . |
1-7 | Severe ED |
8-11 | Moderate ED |
12-16 | Mild to Moderate ED |
17-21 | Mild ED |
22-25 | No signs of ED |
We must know where a man is on the scale so we know what needs to be done to address and treat the problem.
Treatments
People shouldn’t have to suffer or be embarrassed about having any problem of ED whether it is severe or mild because it can be treated. And even better, there are non-invasive treatments to bring back full function. Treatments such as drugs, pumps, rings, and implants may alleviate the symptoms but they can be invasive and have side effects and in some cases, only work temporarily. For example, we have seen some patients that have taken drugs for ED eventually have the drug become ineffective. For these reasons, we focus on non-invasive treatments that don’t require drugs or surgery. The treatments we offer are state-of-the-art treatments and we are seeing miraculous results and seeing men improve dramatically.
